Post - Theme 4: Quantitative research

The reading material for this theme was easy to read. Us being able to choose one of the papers on our own made a big different. I chose a paper that was interesting to read which made it more easy to understand and analyze. The paper by Ilias and colleagues was also easy to read and a good example of quantitative research.

Regarding the assignment for the pre post I felt that it could have been better organized. By starting with the first question you basically analyze the chosen paper with the knowledge that you already had from before. But if the assignment would have been to first reflect on advantages and disadvantages of quantitative methods I believe it would have given many better tools to reflect on the papers research methods. My advantage on this assignment was having done my bachelor thesis where we read a lot about different methods and how to analyze them and avoid common mistakes. I think that those who haven’t had any experience at all with quantitative and qualitative methods maybe would have gained by answering the latter questions first.

As said, I was already familiar with quantitative and qualitative methods so the pre assignment didn’t give me anything. During the seminar my group discussed the advantages and disadvantages of the two methods. We agreed on the difference between them and it felt that we all had grasped the concepts pretty well. A qualitative method is used to achieve a deeper and broader understanding of something. The method could use methods such as conducting interviews with smaller groups. The goal is to understand and develop the knowledge towards the area. Qualitative methods provides the researcher a good opportunity to discover new areas they didn’t know existed. An example is by having an interview with open questions that may lead to the participant mentioning something that wasn’t even taken into consideration during the research. This type of method is more flexible. On the other hand quantitative methods are about numbers, statistic, large amount of data. We also discussed scenarios where these two are most efficient when combined. I brought up a scenario where you are researching an application. The app has a button and a swipe function for the exact same action and the researcher wants to investigate this. The researcher could then use a quantitative method to ask through e.g. a questionnaire how many that use the button function versus the swipe function. This would show which function that is the most popular. To further investigate the researcher would need to use a qualitative method to ask the users questions such as, "Why they prefer a certain type of function?", "What is the reason to one function being more popular than the other?".

Another thing that I found to be interesting during the seminar was the discussion if quantitative or qualitative methods could ever be objective or more objective than the other. The answer was that everything has an impact. Things such as the researcher's location, knowledge, choice of method, or formulation of questions to participants. Everything has been decided by the researcher and affected by something, therefor complete objectivity can never be achieved.

  1. Hi,

you deliver a great reflection of this week's seminar and discuss all important key concepts in quantitative and qualitative methods. I specifically liked your take on how researchers can use these methods and when it's best to combine them. I agree with you, that the pre-blog wasn't too challenging, since we already have some background knowledge on empirical research.

  2. I enjoyed reading your thoughts on this week’s theme! I thought your reflection was well written and structured in a way that made it both interesting and easy to understand. I also thought that the discussion about objectivity/subjectivity was an interesting point and fully agree with you in your reflection about this aspect. Good job!

  3. Very good reflection on the theory of quantitative research. I enjoyed reading through your thought on the lecture and the seminar, which is neatly and well written. I specially like your idea that everything has an impact. This idea is kinda causal but very impressive for our research in the future. Thanks for sharing us with your thoughts!

  4. Hi Isabella,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I must say that your reflection is well structured and very good written. I agree that at this theme it was especially interesting to read what we are interested in. As I was not in the same seminar group as you I find your scenario where you combined qualitative and quantitative methods really good and it shows that you understand the topic. Good work, keep it up!

  5. Hello! Great reflection and I like the constructive nature of your criticism towards this weeks theme. I haven't put any thought myself in the structure of the assignment for this week and therefore find your point of view very interesting. It would seem that a combination of a quantitative and qualitative research method would be the most effective kind but to be able to do this one must have a lot of time on ones hands.

  6. Hi,
It was nice to read about your point of view in this week's theme, since you already have some knowledge on it. In our seminar we also talked about objectivity of data. I agree with you that is difficult to gather objective data, but the objective data is not the point of the research. Researchers want to know the opinion of the participants and theirs spontaneous reaction. In other words, the most important when you gather data, is not to influence the participants before they take part in the study.

  7. Your reflection really summarizes all the important messages of this week's theme quantitative methods. It is clear that you already had a good understanding of these techniques before, but I still appreciate your concise discussion of their benefits and limitations. I especially like that you put your own thoughts in this and tried to get more out of the topic, although you were very familiar with it. You found a good example to explain the combined use of qualitative and quantitative methods - this really visualizes how research can increase in value by blending both together. Enjoyed reading your posts!

  8. Hi Isabella!

I also felt that I had somewhat of a head start on this assignment having read about these things while doing my bachelors thesis. I have seen that some of our classmates have written that they wished they’d have read this course before the bachelor thesis began, what do you think? As I recall it, we had some light reading on the subject (at least in our seminar group) during the preparation phase for the study. Interestingly, we also used qualitative and quantitative methods to evaluate a specific feature of an app!

    Cheers!

  9. You are spot on with both the qualitative and quantitative methods and what differentiates them. I also like what you wrote on the end about objectiveness. I think this reaches back to the theme of week one, "from gods point of view, and I'm not in the mood for that so I'll settle with what you've written here.

    Keep it up!

  10. Hello!
Great reflection on this theme. Your comment about the order of the questions makes a lot of sense. Just as you I knew some of the material in this theme from before which made the whole theme feel less complex this week. Your discussion about when to use both research methods was interesting. I agree with you that the situation decides what is more suitable.

  11. Hi Isabella,
I enjoy reading your blog as well as discussing with you during the seminar. As we talked IRL, I agree with you much on your analysis of quantitative and qualitative research. One for general big data with numbers, the other helps to discover further or deeper understanding. In addition, I appreciate your thinking on the objectivity. It is very interesting and inspiring to rethink the research from this perspective. Thanks for sharing your insightful thoughts. I am looking forward to more discussion with you in future.

  12. I see that we agree on the idea that neither qualitative nor quantative research is perfect, and that a combination of the two often proves the most succesful. To me, the discussion is more about in what degree you should utilize either one, and in which kind of topics one or the other should be dominant. Thanks for your post!
